Quilombola Oral Histories
Oral Histories with Quilombola Leaders of Alcântara is a project that started off in February/March of 2024 through which 18 Quilombola leaders from different parts of Alcântara, including Canelatiua, Vista Alegre, Santa Maria, Mamuna, São Raimundo, Márunda, Jabaquara, Morajituba, and Itamatatiua, were interviewed. These interviews speak to the diverse and intersecting traditions, histories, and senses of identity that make up our Quilombola communities of Alcântara.
The key purpose of this oral history project is to preserve, affirm, and uplift our unique cultures of resistance to the Brazilian State, our collective ownership of land, and our traditional lifeways. Please look out for updates about the physical and digital exhibitions that we will be organizing to further disseminate and uplift these stories to people in Brazil and beyond!
