Learn

We, Quilombolas, are resilient peoples with strong bonds and shared cultural heritage. Our communities formed in the context of  struggles against colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, and its legacies in Brazil.

Today, Quilombos stand as beacons of resistance and solidarity. In Alcântara, we use our social and political power to preserve and celebrate our heritage, despite threats and violations against our territorial rights.

Celebrate

Voices and Visions celebrate our heritage, culture, and experiences in authentic ways. Through oral histories and photo workshops with Quilombola community members – others can begin to understand the deep-rooted connection to collective territory and belonging through identity.

These Voices and Visions shed light on what matters most to us. Through visual and verbal storytelling, we foster counter-narratives to rewrite our history and mobilize social and political capital to advance our rights to self-determination and sovereignty over our territories.
